Angus Kinnear shares ‘desperate’ Joe Rodon Leeds United transfer admission after summer saga
Angus Kinnear has shared that Joe Rodon was “desperate” to return to Leeds United after his year-long loan spell last season.
Rodon was one of Leeds’ best players last term and was one of the reasons that the Whites’ defence was so strong.
the Welshman chose the West Yorkshire outfit as the next step in his career despite being linked with Premier League teams such as Ipswich and Leicester,
Speaking on The Square Ball Podcast (12 September) Kinnear admitted that this was no mistake and that the defender was already showing his desire to stay at Elland Road six months before the end of the campaign.
“When you get a player like Joe Rodon, who after Christmas last year or in the spring when we were doing our kit shoots, insisted on being in the kit shoots for the following season’s kit, which is obviously a disaster for the retail team because if we hadn’t signed him, all the imagery would’ve been dead,” Kinnear said.
“Joe was desperate to be here and before we had any discussions with Tottenham Hotspur or his agent, he was six months out, showing his desire to be at the club and that’s really important.”
Joe Rodon joining Leeds United was a good move for both parties
Leeds have had a big makeover to their squad for the 2024/25 season and, while they obviously did not want to lose players such as Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville to Premier League sides, they could find themselves better off.
Gray’s sale rocked Leeds’ fanbase but it also gave the club an advantage in the negotiations for Rodon.
The sale of both players almost came in unison with Rodon quickly arriving at Elland Road a day or so after Gray had departed.
The Welshman was arguably one of the best signings that Leeds made during the summer transfer window as, not only did he help further solidify their defence but, he also helped set a precedent for the rest of Leeds’ transfer window.

While the club left deals for players such as Largie Ramazani and Manor Solomon until the dying embers of the window, suitable replacements for those who exited were found and allowed the West Yorkshire outfit to outline their goals to their fans.
It’s still early days in the season of course but for now, at least, the club seems to be in a good place.
