Angus Kinnear pokes fun at integrity of Premier League owners test

Leeds United CEO Angus Kinnear poked fun at the Premier League Owners and Directors test in his programme notes ahead of the Wolves game on Saturday.

Newcastle’s Saudi owners completed their takeover earlier this month and Kinnear had plenty to say about how they were allowed to buy the club.

He also called for a review of financial fair play in the English top flight to ensure this does not set a precedent.

Via the Yorkshire Evening Post, he said, “The media and public have been left debating why the Premier League owners and directors’ test is harder to fail than GCSE PE.

“But our real focus now should be on how the new owners of Newcastle embrace the values of equality, diversity and inclusion that are core to every club’s membership of the greatest league in the world.

“Simultaneously, there is an opportunity for all clubs to participate in a long overdue review of the rules that ensure the financial and commercial fair play that are central to keeping our league competitive and attractive.

“After the bitter schisms within the league caused by Project Big Picture and the European Super League we may, at last, have found an issue which unites at least 18 member clubs.”

Makes sense

Kinnear hasn’t held back his punches while describing this situation and we love him for it.

He makes fantastic points about the Premier League test and if it was any stringent then they would’ve stopped the takeover from going ahead.

While it may be good for Newcastle, it doesn’t show the Premier League in a very good light.

Now that the takeover has gone ahead there’s very little anyone can do other than vent fury to get their points across.

Hopefully, this is an eye-opener for the directors in the top flight and something must change in the coming years.
