Ange Postecoglou to Leeds United 'alive again' amid Andoni Iraola blow

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou remains among the “named” candidates for the vacant Leeds United job, according to the Daily Record.

According to the Scottish Sun (8 February), the Australian was on an early shortlist to replace Jesse Marsch at Elland Road.

Former Premier League goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer recently praised his compatriot for the “phenomenal” job he has done at Celtic and doesn’t think he will leave Park Head any time soon (talking on Sky Sports on 9 February, quoted by the Scotsman).

The links to the Celtic boss appeared to die down but the Daily Record now claim (9 February) a potential move for the 57-year-old is “alive again” after the Yorkshire side missed out on Rayo Vallecano boss Andoni Iraola.

“Postecoglou remains among the named candidates as the Elland Road club search for Jesse Marsch’s replacement,” they wrote.

“Just when Celtic thought Leeds United had their new boss lined up, the possibility of an approach for Ange Postecoglou is alive again after their first choice said no.”

Ideal candidate

Postecoglou would be the ideal candidate to take the job at Elland Road. He plays an expansive and innovative style of football, he’s experienced, and he knows the pressures of managing a huge club in Celtic, what’s not to like? If the board could appoint the Australian, then they almost certainly would.

However, at the moment, convincing him to make the move south would prove rather difficult. The Brighton and Everton jobs have both become available in recent months, and the 57-year-old has remained unmoved. However, after Leeds’ thankless manager search to date, it would not be a surprise to see the board test the water in Glasgow.

An appointment early next week now looks like the most likely solution and it’s absolutely essential an appointment is made before the game against Everton on 18 February. For now, fans will be content with Michael Skubala taking one more game in charge, particularly after the impressive result against Manchester United on Wednesday evening (8 February).
