Andrea Radrizzani reacts as Sam Greenwood returns for Leeds United Under-23s after injury

Andrea Radrizzani was delighted to see Sam Greenwood back in action for the Leeds United Under-23s this week.

Greenwood, 20, had to undergo surgery after suffering an injury in Leeds’ FA Cup defeat to West Ham on 9 January.

On Monday [28 February], the young forward made a goalscoring return for Leeds’ Under-23s as he netted in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham in Premier League 2.

Leeds owner Radrizzani was clearly thrilled to see that and took to his Twitter account to sharing a strong arm emoji and the words: “Back scoring.”

Back in the first-team?

Until Patrick Bamford is back from his injury hell – and who knows when that will be? – Greenwood could be an option for new manager Jesse Marsch.

Marcelo Biesla had integrated Greenwood into the Leeds senior squad prior to his injury against West Ham in January.

He’d played four times in all competitions for the Whites’ first-team and had also featured on eight of Bielsa’s benches in the Premier League.

Greenwood is probably below Joe Gelhardt in the pecking order but the ex-Sunderland striker is still very clinical and has his uses.

In 15 Premier League 2 appearances this season, the 20-year-old has netted eight goals and also supplied four assists for the Under-23s.

It’s impressive form and now that he’s back fit, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him involved under Marsch in the coming weeks while we await Bamford’s return.

Daniel James, Rodrigo and Tyler Roberts have all been tried up front in Bamford’s absence and only Gelhardt has filled us with any kind of confidence – and he’s a kid.

Let’s see what Greenwood can do too.
