Ally McCoist wowed by Darko Gyabi despite Leeds United scoreline v Cardiff at half time

Ally McCoist waxed lyrical about Leeds United youngster Darko Gyabi after he produced a moment of magic in the early stages of the FA Cup tie against Cardiff City, live on ITV.

Despite Jesse Marsch’s side succumbing to a 2-0 deficit in the first half, the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Willy Gnonto still looked sprightly in attack, while Gyabi caught commentator McCoist’s attention.

After linking up beautifully with Gnonto on the left, the 18-year-old shimmied past one Cardiff defender with a brilliant shift of the ball between his feet before a last-gasp tackle denied a goal-scoring opportunity.

Pundit McCoist, who was commentating live on ITV Sport (Sunday 8 January), gushed over the midfielder’s role in the move.

“I would take his feet [Gyabi] all-day Clive [Tylsesley],” he joked.

“That is terrific feet there. Brilliant right-to-left shift and a good tackle in the end, but what great feet there.

“Lovely to watch, and it’s a good challenge again by Jack Simpson.”

Bright start

Gyabi was everywhere in the early stages of this third-round encounter.

The youngster, who made his Leeds debut earlier this season in the League Cup, was once again handed a starting berth by Marsch, and he didn’t disappoint.

He stung a 20-yard shot just wide of the Cardiff goal in the opening exchanges before linking up beautifully with Gnonto for this particular chance. The balance he showed to pass two opposition defenders was beautiful, and his close control of the ball was something Leeds do lack.

The Whites still remained vulnerable at the back, however, as Jaden Philogene opened the scoring following some dreadful defending. The amount of space the Bluebirds attacker was given was very alarming, and it still looks likes Marsch needs to work on getting caught in transition.

After shifting from his usual left-back position, Pascal Stuijk was all over the place in the heart of the Leeds defence, and the addition of Max Wober can’t come soon enough.
