Ally McCoist shares Steven Gerrard verdict amid Leeds United managerial links

Ally McCoist has urged Steven Gerrard to move abroad after the former Aston Villa boss was linked with the vacant Leeds United managerial position.

The Sun reported on 3 June that the 43-year-old is being hunted by Leeds and Leicester as both clubs plot an immediate return to the Premier League.

However, McCoist feels a move to West Yorkshire wouldn’t be the “best” move for the Liverpool legend.

“I am not sure. And I am not sure, believe it or not, Leeds would be the best choice for Steven Gerrard,” McCoist told talkSPORT Breakfast on Tuesday 6 June.

“I actually think – and I’ve said it about Frank Lampard – I would like to see Steven and Frank go abroad. Go to France or Spain. Just somewhere different.

“I know it didn’t work out for Scott Parker, but at least he’s tried it. You get an opportunity to learn another language, style of play.”

Interesting

This is a good shout from McCoist. Gerrard wouldn’t be the first name most Leeds fans would be after. His failure at Aston Villa has cast serious doubt over his ability to manage at the top end of English football. Potentially heading overseas wouldn’t be the worst thing for the Englishman.

It could give him the chance to rejuvenate his career.

Leeds need a manager who is proven in the second tier. Someone who can give them the best chance of an automatic return to the top flight. Scott Parker is a name that has been bandied about and the former Fulham man wouldn’t be the worst option.

Parker has won promotion twice from the Championship with Fulham and Bournemouth. Albeit, both times he was significantly backed, but why can’t something similar happen at Elland Road?

Nevertheless, something has to happen on the manager front, and fast. The longer the position remains unfilled, the greater impact it will have on Leeds’ hopes of promotion back to the Premier League.
