Ally McCoist reacts to Sam Allardyce Leeds United links amid ‘ridiculous’ Elland Road development

Ally McCoist has praised Sam Allardyce’s “very good” managerial record after the 68-year-old was linked with the Leeds United job.

The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano revealed (Twitter, 1 May) that the former England boss is now the favourite to replace Javi Gracia, with the Spaniard on the verge of the sack.

Speaking live on talkSPORT on Tuesday (2 May), McCoist believes it would be no surprise if Leeds did make a change.

“Sam’s got a very good history in that area on the league, in keeping clubs up, so there’s your answer to that question,” said McCoist (talkSPORT Breakfast, 06:25, 2 May).

“Are they right to do it, they might be because they’re in free-fall and shipping a ridiculous amount of goals. It would be no surprise if they did make a change, it’s a heck of a gamble.”

Remarkable

The circus that is Leeds United continues to deliver. The mess that has been created by Victor Orta and the board now means that sacking Gracia is probably the right decision. But it should never have reached this point. Jesse Marsch shouldn’t have been given the job in the first place. Marcelo Bielsa should have been backed adequately and remained in charge, even if he took the Whites back down to the Championship.

Allardyce’s potential appointment screams desperation, but, at this point, it’s the only way for Leeds to realistically survive. The trip to Manchester City can be written off now, but the upcoming fixtures against Newcastle, West Ham and Tottenham must be capitalised on.

A new manager bounce is required, and someone to come in and sure up what has been an extremely leaky backline in recent weeks. The former West Brom boss is known for his defensive methods and that could potentially stem the flow of goals.

In other Leeds United news, yet another injury has left a Whites ace facing surgery that will keep him out for months according to Phil Hay.
