Ally McCoist reacts to nightmare Leeds United news from Elland Road

Ally McCoist has reacted to Ethan Ampadu’s injury at Elland Road, suggesting it is a “nightmare” for Leeds United.

Daniel Farke confirmed in a press conference on Monday (30 September) that the Wales international would be sidelined for up to 10 weeks having picked up a knee injury in the win over Coventry City [Yorkshire Evening Post].

While there is a belief within Elland Road that the Whites have the quality to cover in their captain’s absence, talkSPORT host McCoist believes it will be a major blow to Leeds in the coming weeks.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Tuesday (1 October, 7:49) he said: “Leeds United captain Ethan Ampadu will be out until at least January having sustained a knee ligament injury in the Championship win against Coventry.

“Nightmare, we’re seeing so many injuries now and the knee ligaments are the ones, ankle ligaments are the worst as you know.”

What has happened to Ethan Ampadu at Leeds United and Elland Road?

It isn’t an overreaction to suggest that Ampadu’s injury is a nightmare for Leeds United as McCoist has suggested.

While one player doesn’t make or break a squad, there are few talents more important to Farke’s team at Elland Road than Ampadu who has become an integral part of what makes Leeds tick over the last year or so.

The Wales international has been excellent for the Whites both in the middle of the park and as a defender when required. Without that depth and versatility, Leeds are looking a bit short of options as they look to win promotion back to the Premier League.

Ethan Ampadu is Leeds’ new club captain

Hopefully, there should be enough cover in the German’s ranks to deal with the captain’s absence. Leeds didn’t spend loads of money in the summer transfer window, but they did recruit smartly and sensibly to add some much-needed depth.

The question will be whether or not the players recruited in the summer are capable of matching the levels set by Ampadu in the past.
