Ally McCoist reacts to ‘incredible’ Leeds United development, drops ‘crazy’ relegation prediction

Ally McCoist believes Leeds United will retain their Premier League status despite conceding eleven goals in two Premier League matches.

Liverpool were the latest team to inflict misery on Javi Gracia’s side with a 6-1 hammering at Elland Road on Monday evening (17 April).

Despite Leeds’ “incredible” defensive fragility at present, McCoist still feels the Yorkshire side will be a Premier League club come the start of the 2023/24 season.

“You’ve got to [fear for them]. I mean defensively, that’s incredible,” said McCoist (talkSPORT, 06:25, 18 April).

“You fear for them, but I just think they will have enough. I know it sounds crazy after conceding eleven goals, but they wouldn’t be in my three to go down.”

Bold

This is an extremely bold prediction from McCoist. Leeds have just been torn apart twice in quick succession. They simply cannot defend at the moment. It was remarkable to see Gracia’s men show little in terms of game management or attempt to sit in and stem the flow.

Something has to change heading into Saturday’s trip to face Fulham at Craven Cottage (22 April). The West Londoners are coming off of an impressive win over Everton, bringing to an end a four-game losing streak under Marco Silva.

The Whites have to head to the capital with a different plan. It’s time for the gung-ho football to take a back seat. Potentially introducing one or two more leaders into the starting XI could be the route for Gracia to head down. Liam Cooper was sat on the bench and is yet to start a game under the new head coach.

Luke Ayling was also an unused substitute and Adam Forshaw was introduced after his injuries woes. Potentially including one or two of these players could bring some much-needed leadership and improve Leeds’ defensive record.
