Ally McCoist makes ‘impossible’ Daniel Farke claim at Leeds United

Daniel Farke isn’t universally popular at Leeds United because he’s not Marcelo Bielsa, Ally McCoist had said.

Speaking on talkSPORT (10 December, 9:20am), McCoist and Jeff Stelling agreed that while United’s home form is “frightening”, Farke is still to win over certain sections of the fanbase.

Farke’s side currently sit second in the table having conceded just once in a seven-game winning streak at Elland Road, but both pundits agreed that the spectre of Bielsa still looms large.

Stelling said: “Leeds are just one point off Sheffield United, they’ve won their last seven home games, and yet despite that, Daniel Farke I don’t think is universally popular.”

“Why is that? Because I actually agree with you”, McCoist replied.

“Their home record is absolutely frightening to tell you the truth – (but) I think there’s a certain section of the Leeds fans, perhaps just not having him at this moment in time.

“That’s unfortunate, not just for Farke, but for anybody that comes in post-Bielsa really, because it sounds like he’s going to have an impossible act to follow.”

Daniel Farke can write his own history at Leeds United

While it’s true that Farke isn’t anywhere near as loved as Bielsa by the Elland Road faithful, that could all change if the German does finish the job he was hired to do in 2023 and achieve promotion.

Farke would then mirror Bielsa’s achievement of getting the Whites back to the Premier League at the second attempt, having also stumbled in last season’s play-offs despite going one better than El Loco.

Marcelo Bielsa is still revered at Leeds United.

Bielsa’s side, however, defied all pre-season predictions to reach the play-off semi-finals in 2019 before romping to the title by 10 points the following season – and this is where the key differences lie.

Having been relegated from the Premier League and given the parachute payments which come with that directly before his arrival, promotion is not only a dream for Farke, it’s the expectation.

Bielsa lifting the entire club off the canvas and back to the top will make him a universally-revered figure in Leeds forever more, but if Farke can establish them in the Premier League, he too will earn hero status.
