Ally McCoist jumps to Raphinha defence after 'Stupid' Jamie O'Hara jibe at Leeds United star

Jamie O’Hara has branded Leeds United star Raphinha as “stupid” and “reckless” after his penalty concession against Chelsea on Saturday (11 December).

Raphinha, 24, scored the first goal of the game at Stamford Bridge via the penalty spot but it was his challenge on Antonio Rudiger that gave Chelsea the chance to go 2-1 ahead in the second half, before the home side emerged 3-1 winners.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Monday (13 December), O’Hara said: “The penalties in that game, the Rudiger one a lot of people were saying ‘it wasn’t a pen’ but Raphinha the first one, just reckless, I know he won the ball but it was reckless.

“The second one, when you’re sticking your toe in you’re giving the referee the option, you’re letting him make a decision, so I thought they were all right.

“Two stupid fouls in the box cost them the game.”

Ally McCoist disagreed, though, as he responded: “I wasn’t sure about the first one Jamie. It’s a funny one that one.”

Unneccessary?

Raphinha put Leeds on the right track in West London with his first-half penalty but his challenge on Rudiger gave Jorginho the chance to score a spot-kick of his own, his first of the game.

Joe Gelhardt later came off the bench to score his first Premier League goal but another foul on Rudiger, this time by Mateusz Klich, led to Jorginho scoring again.

It was a game fraught with incident and controversy and that spilled over after the game as the two clubs were involved in an unseemly brawl on the pitch at Stamford Bridge.

But, speaking purely on football matters, it was a cruel kick in the nether regions to Marcelo Bielsa and his charges who, despite a depleted squad, put up a valiant fight against the European champions.

Positives have to be drawn, though, particularly with Gelhardt, and it should offer the Whites some hope ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Manchester City.

In other Leeds United news, this Whites player has undergone a major operation and his injury lay-off timeline has been outlined.
