Ally McCoist impressed by Jesse Marsch at Leeds so far

Ally McCoist has admitted he is impressed by Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, but says they’re ‘not out of the woods yet’ in their battle against relegation.

The Whites opened up a seven-point gap over the relegation zone with two wins over Norwich and Wolves and are set to welcome back some key figures from injury after the international break.

McCoist, speaking on talkSPORT’s breakfast show [March 29, 7:26am], was answering a fan question about the job of new manager Marsch and the legendary Rangers striker said he thought they would be safe this season.

“Yeah I have been [impressed],” he said.

“I was at Elland Road for the Villa game, well beaten. They got a little bit of luck at Wolves with the sending off, which I didn’t think was a sending off to be honest with you. But showed great spirit to come back, Luke Ayling hit the winner there.

“I thought they would be okay, I still think they’ll be okay. I don’t think they’re out of the woods yet but I think they’ll be absolutely fine.

“It’s very early to comment on the job he’s doing, but certainly the last two victories will be really encouraging.”

Big shoes

When Marsch took over at the club he had huge shoes to fill because of the love and support Marcelo Bielsa had already with the fans.

But what Marsch has done since coming in is steady the ship and get results, while maintaining the spirit of the squad and fan-base at Elland Road too.

The manner of the wins has been great for morale too, with an injury time winner after conceding late on against their relegation rivals before coming from 2-0 down against Wolves after suffering four injuries during the game too.

Marsch has shown why the club tracked him for two years and took the gamble when they did, playing good attacking football and stopping the constant tide of goals going into his own side’s goal.

The job isn’t done, but their position looks infinitely better than it did even a month ago and if they can stay in the Premier League the decision to bring him in will be fully justified.
