Ally McCoist destroys Willy Gnonto for 'ridiculous' incident in Leeds United FA Cup tie v Cardiff
Ally McCoist has slammed Willy Gnonto for his “ridiculous” dive in the first half of the FA Cup third-round clash between Leeds United and Cardiff.
The Italian youngster was shown a yellow card by referee Jarred Gillett in the 27th minute after going down in the penalty area.
The 19-year-old appeared to have wriggled clear of Tom Sang before throwing himself to turf, a decision which left McCoist baffled.
“If he’s dived it’s madness and he has. He’s got the beating of the full-back, he does really well and he just goes to the ground,” said McCoist (ITV commentary, 2:29, 8 January).
“It’s lovely feet but that’s ridiculous, it really is.”
Learn from it
It’s up to Gnonto to learn from incidents such as this. There may have been the slightest contact from Sang, but it was nowhere near enough to see the young attacker throw himself to the ground.
The Italian was in an excellent position and could well have gotten on the scoresheet for Leeds if he had stayed on his feet. Jesse Marsch will be aware of the pros and cons of utilising younger players, and there will always be a tinge of immaturity in their displays at times.
With the use of VAR in the Premier League, it’s almost impossible to get away with simulation in the modern game, and it will be a moment Gnonto won’t repeat again. It was a flat performance from Marsch’s side with a number of players struggling to make an impact.
It’s time for a number of these players to really step up and show they are capable of making an impact for Leeds in the Premier League.
In other Leeds United news, the club is in advanced talks over another major signing, according to Fabrizio Romano.
