Ally McCoist blown away by Kalvin Phillips
Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips’ England performances have been praised by Ally McCoist.
The former Rangers player and manager has highlighted the importance of Phillips and his midfield partner Declan Rice for the Three Lions at Euro 2020.
He also mentioned how their energy levels have been key in closing opponents down and barely giving them a sniff of the ball.
In his column for The Daily Telegraph, McCoist wrote, “The energy levels of Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips will be so important to not giving Denmark any time to settle at all.
“It was perfect in the Croatia game because they forced one of the best central midfielders in the world to get the ball off his own back four.
“That is what Luka Modric ended up doing for the last 20 minutes of that game.”
Getting the credit he deserves
Phillips was widely referred to as the player that was overrated by Leeds United fans. This certainly came from people who did not watch too much of us in the Championship, and even in the Premier League were always focused on the negatives.
However, with Gareth Southgate giving him his senior bow before he made his Premier League debut, a lot of people started to take note of just how good he is.
Little over a year since, and Phillips has now become such an integral cog of this Three Lions machine.
Prior to the Ukraine match, he had played in every minute of every game at the EUROs, and had England not been winning that one so comfortably, he would’ve probably stayed on for the full 90 minutes.
He’s one of those midfield players, like Marco Verratti, who is capable of playing as a 6 and an 8. Phillips is happy to dictate the play from deep but is also terrifying when he’s breaking the lines and playing those killer passes into the penalty area.
We’re so lucky to have a player like him in our ranks and hopefully, he stays forever.
