Alioski shares what Bielsa did in dressing room at HT to spur Leeds onto victory v Fulham

Ezgjan Alioski has praised Marcelo Bielsa after the Leeds United manager inspired his side at half-time against Fulham on Saturday.

Leeds were 1-0 up at the break but Fulham had been on top for large parts of the opening 45 minutes.

Bielsa made two changes of personnel at half-time with Pablo Hernandez and Alioski coming off the bench but that wasn’t the only thing the Argentine did to kick his men into gear.

“When we see the first half, we say we were a little lucky,” Alioski said, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“Fulham play really good football. We know that we are not a team that wants to defend, we’re a team that wants to attack.

“Marcelo Bielsa gave us a good talk inside (at half-time). He woke us up. It was not so comfortable for us. Normally nobody wants to play against us like this.

“I think maybe people are scared to keep the ball like Fulham did. We respect Fulham. That’s why in the second half we changed this and we wanted to avoid them keeping the ball.”

Bielsa is one of the best managers in the world – there’s no doubt about it.

Who would have thought of making the changes that he made at half-time? Taking off goalscorer Patrick Bamford after 45 minutes was such a big call but it was ultimately one that helped Leeds bag a massive three points.

But clearly that wasn’t the only thing Bielsa did because as good as it is to change players around and make tactical switches, lighting a fire in the bellies of your players can be quite difficult to do for someone who doesn’t speak great English.

Bielsa would have been relying on a translator or a member of his coaching staff to help convey his point across to the players in the dressing room and hearing his words via someone else might make it difficult to put across the passion.

That didn’t seem to be much of an issue though as everything Bielsa did in that 15-minute break worked wonders.
