Alan Shearer wowed by ‘absolutely magnificent’ Patrick Bamford moment in Leeds United win v Peterborough
Alan Shearer was left wowed by Patrick Bamford’s “absolutely magnificent” strike in the clash between Leeds United and Peterborough, labelling it “goal of the season”.
The Whites confirmed their place in the FA Cup fourth round with an impressive 3-0 win over Peterborough on Sunday 7 January, thanks to an Ethan Ampadu brace and a wonder strike from Bamford in the second half.
Daniel Farke’s side were relatively impressive for much of the game but Bamford’s strike stole the majority of the plaudits and left Shearer and Gary Lineker stunned as they were blown away by the Whites’ forward’s technique.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football Podcast (8 January, 32:00) Lineker said: “Patrick Bamford’s goal, that’s got to be goal of the weekend. Those that didn’t see it, the ball was knocked up, he kind of turned, chested it round and volleyed it with the left foot right into the top corner.”
Shearer responded saying: “It was absolutely magnificent wasn’t it? The technique, the touch and then the execution. Wow, what a strike, unbelievable. Goal of the weekend without a doubt. Goal of the season.”

Bamford has always been capable of moments of magic throughout his career but Sunday’s wonder strike was perhaps the best of his career. The technique required to not only bring the ball down but then score was out of this world.
You have to wonder if, after a difficult start to the campaign in the Championship, the Englishman’s goal against Birmingham City on New Year’s Day may have been exactly what he needed to get his mojo back and get among the goals once again.
Earlier in the season, there was absolutely no way that the Leeds United forward would have even taken on that effort from such long range, but his confidence was clear to see as he struck the ball so sweetly.
If anybody knows a thing or two about scoring impressive goals it’s Shearer so to get both his and Lineker’s seal of approval shows just how impressive the Leeds striker’s effort was. Whether it will be a goal of the season winner remains to be seen, but it’s definitely a contender.
