Alan Shearer thrilled by Leeds star Patrick Bamford in 3-1 win v Tottenham
Alan Shearer was thrilled by the performance of Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford in the 3-1 win against Spurs on Saturday.
After a quiet few weeks, the attacker finally found the back of the net with Gareth Southgate sat watching on at Elland Road.
Eric Dier was tasked with marking Bamford, and Shearer was left gobsmacked as the Leeds star simply embarrassed him with his movement in the final third.
Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer was thrilled by the Whites talisman who finally got his name on the scoresheet yet again.
“There’s Bamford, there’s Dier,” he said,
“He has a look at him there, he knows, he gets flat-footed, and Bamford is just too good for him. He gets the goal his performance deserved.”
Timely.
With Southgate watching on, this was a brilliant reminder for him as Bamford easily tormented two international defenders; one being his own.
Dier couldn’t handle the Leeds attack, but that came from Bamford’s non-stop running left him red-faced and unable to keep up.
With the European Championships coming up in the summer, there is an extended squad available, meaning two more spots have come up for grabs.
Bamford could easily grab one of those, and with goals in his remaining three outings, he could make himself impossible to not select.
This performance was certainly needed, and Bamford himself will admit his relief after going weeks without finding the back of the net, Shearer was clearly a big fan.
