Alan Shearer thrilled by Leeds ace Illan Meslier after big nomination

Alan Shearer has been left thrilled by Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier in the Premier League this season.

The young French star has been nominated for the Young Player of the Season award, alongside the likes of Declan Rice and Ruben Dias.

Shearer singled out the shot-stopping and distribution of Meslier, who has impressed under Marcelo Bielsa’s strong demands.

Speaking to the Premier League on their official Twitter account, Shearer was left floored by the confidence of the Frenchman.

“Let’s start with Illan Meslier,” he said.

“He’s a fantastic shot-stopper first and foremost, keeping 11 clean sheets. His positioning is also strong, as well as his distribution and he ranks fourth overall in save percentage, while also facing the fourth-most shots in the league.”

Out of this world.

Meslier has been phenomenal this season.

The youngster was thrown into the deep end and was handed the number one role, after Kiko Casilla’s demise towards the end of the Championship campaign.

According to WyScout, only three keepers have made more saves than Meslier in the top-five European leagues.

It is quite clear that Meslier won’t win this award, though.

Having said that, it is brilliant news that our players and more importantly staff are being recognised for their achievements this season.

Bielsa has already been nominated for the manager equivalent of the award, and we cross our fingers that at least one of those can bring home the silverware.
