Alan Shearer tears 'hopeless' Max Wober to shreds after what he did in first half in Leeds United 1-0 loss v Everton

Alan Shearer has torn Max Wober to shreds after the Leeds United defender produced a “hopeless” long ball during their 1-0 loss to Everton.

Michael Skubala’s side were extremely disappointing at Goodison Park and couldn’t complain too much when Séamus Coleman gave the Toffees a vital victory.

The former Newcastle striker highlighted a first-half pass from the January signing which went straight out of play, resulting in a goal kick for the hosts.

“It happened on more than one occasion. Wober here hits a long hopeful, well, hopeless ball, whatever you want to say out for a goal kick,” said Shearer (Match of the Day, 1hr 03m 43s, 18 February).

Day to forget

The trip to Goodison Park was one to forget for everybody associated with Leeds United – and for many, there’s now a realisation that relegation is very much on the cards.

There wasn’t much between the two sides, but there can be no doubt that Everton looked the more likely team to come away with three points. The Whites’ misery was compounded further after Southampton and Bournemouth both picked up vital wins.

Next weekend’s clash against the Saints has the feeling of a make-or-break for Leeds in their fight against the drop. Teams who are engulfed in the relegation battle are picking and the Yorkshire side look like the one team who are heading in the wrong direction.

After the defeat at Goodison, the board could well look to act and bring in a short-term appointment to try and muster an immediate turnaround in form. It seems mightily unfair to expect anything from Skubala after he was thrust into the job at a moment’s notice.
