Alan Shearer slams Michael Salisbury after controversy in Leeds loss vs Newcastle United
Newcastle United were wrongfully awarded a penalty against Leeds United in the Premier League on Wednesday.
Daniel Farke’s team travelled to St James’ Park on 7 January, with travelling fans suffering heartbreak after a 102nd-minute winner from Harvey Barnes.
The Whites took the lead three times in the 4-3 loss, but the German manager must be feeling hard done by some of Michael Salisbury’s decisions.
In second-half stoppage time, Brenden Aaronson’s handball led to a Newcastle penalty, but the USA international was arguably unlucky to be penalised.
Newcastle United didn’t deserve penalty vs Leeds United
Alan Shearer doesn’t believe Newcastle should’ve been awarded a penalty against Leeds.
In the 88th minute, with Aaronson closing down the ball, an attempted cross hit the attacker’s hand, but there’s an argument that he couldn’t have done much about it.
The Premier League icon and the Magpies legend was also baffled by Salisbury’s decision to point to the spot, which ended up being a significant call in the game.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football on 9 January, Shearer said, “I’ll always give you an honest opinion. What’s he meant to do with his arms when he’s going to challenge like that? It’s just not handball. It can’t be handball. I just don’t agree with it.”
Farke certainly has every right to fume with the calls at St James’ Park, as the West Yorkshire outfit’s seven-game unbeaten run has snapped.
The Peacocks now have a chance to reset in the FA Cup against Derby County on 11 January before returning to league action against Fulham.
Daniel Farke already looking at changes after Newcastle United collapse
Farke has admitted Lucas Perri will be dropped against Derby, with Karl Darlow set to start in goal for the Whites.
Leeds brought the Brazilian goalkeeper in the summer after the German manager lost faith in Illan Meslier, but a similar fate could potentially await the former Olympique Lyon ace.

Perri has made a few errors in recent matches, leading to dropped points, which isn’t ideal during the West Yorkshire outfit’s fight for survival.
It will be interesting to see how the situation with the 28-year-old shot-stopper unfolds and whether he’ll be back in the starting lineup at Elland Road on 17 January.
