Alan Shearer raves about Leeds United defender Pascal Struijk

Alan Shearer has showered heaps of praise on Leeds United defender Pascal Struijk.

The popular BBC Match of the Day pundit has suggested that the Dutch defender has “made his case” while speaking on Premier League’s official YouTube channel this week.

The 22-year-old has played in multiple positions for the Whites and he has become a key player for the club.

“Let’s take a look at Leeds defender Pascal Struijk,” said Shearer.

“The left-footed 22-year-old got given his chance following an injury to Liam Cooper and while Leeds have not been at their best defensively this term, he’s certainly made his case to be a regular in the team.

“Physically imposing at 6 ft 3in, he welcomes comparisons to Virgil van Dijk and having played for the Netherlands at youth level, Leeds fans will be hoping he reaches similar heights.

“He has averaged a block every match so far this season and it’s not just luck that puts him in the right place at the right time.”

Top talent

The Dutch defender is a top talent, and he has all the potential to be a quality Premier League defender in the future.

Joined from the fabled Ajax youth set-up, he has been nurtured and polished by Marcelo Bielsa.

Following the injury to Liam Cooper, the Dutchman took his place in the side, and did remarkably well, despite the fact the Whites struggled badly defensively.

Due to his physically imposing style, he is often compared to Liverpool hero Virgil van Dijk.

Truth be told, Van Dijk is arguably one of the best defenders in the Premier League, and Struck has a long way to go before such comparisons can be drawn.

Shearer has pointed out his blocking ability but what stands out about him is his versatility. He has featured in midfield, central defence and even at left-back this season which shows his quality and his ability to adapt as to the requirement of the team.
