Alan Shearer: Luke Ayling challenge in Leeds United defeat v Arsenal 'Crazy'

Alan Shearer could not believe his eyes after Luke Ayling was sent off for Leeds United against Arsenal on Sunday [08 May].

The Match of the Day pundit labelled it “crazy” after the right-back went lunging into Gabriel Martinelli double-footed.

Shearer mentioned the problems Leeds have had with injuries, as yet another player will now be missing for the rest of the season.

Speaking live on Match of the Day 2 on Sunday [08 May], Shearer could not believe his eyes at the challenge.

“It’s a crazy challenge,” he said.

“It’s out of frustration because he was being run ragged from Martinelli, look at that, what is he thinking of?

“The problem that Leeds have had this season have not being able to get all their players out onto the pitch because of their injuries, come to the end of the season and he does that.

“Most yellow cards in Premier League history, it’s incredible.”

Stupidity.

This was one of the worst challenges we have ever seen.

Not in terms of causing injury, but to actually think you could run in and do that with the team in the position that it is in, is mindblowing.

Ayling completely lost his head and now he has made no one but his teammates pay, with only three games to go and relegation facing us.

Jesse Marsch now has now out-and-out right-back available to choose from and will either have to play Jamie Shackleton or Robin Koch there.

That isn’t what you need when fighting, you need someone experienced you can rely on, which is something we had until yesterday clearly.

It was stupidity, and it cost us yesterday, and it could go on to cost us our entire Premier League status, something we can’t believe we’re even thinking about.

Time to go to the drawing board, something needs to be done.
