Alan Shearer compares Leeds United attacker Joe Gelhardt to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

Alan Shearer was blown away by Joe Gelhardt’s trickery as Leeds United salvaged a last-gasp draw against Brighton on Sunday afternoon.

The Liverpool-born attacker worked his way in an extremely tight space, beating a few defenders to get the ball to Pascal Struijk who then headed the ball home to make it 1-1.

Shearer admits that it’s something Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo do, and if they had done something like it again, it would’ve been talked about for days.

Speaking on Premier League Productions’ post-match show after Newcastle v Arsenal, he said, “That skill, if it comes from Messi and Ronaldo and Messi we’ll be talking all about it for weeks. The way he sits him and down and dinks it to [Struijk]. It could be a huge moment for Leeds.”

Spot on

Gelhardt’s tricker was immaculate at that moment and it could be what keeps Leeds in the top flight this season.

They still have to go down to Brentford and get a result, but given what we’ve seen against Brighton, there’s every reason to be confident.

The 20-year-old has to start the game as this moment will be a massive confidence booster for him and he will go into that clash with his head held high.

Not that we have a fly on the wall at Thorp Arch, but he’s certainly going to be training twice as hard as he normally would as should the rest of the players.

The entire season now comes down to this game and in many ways, it’s like a play-off final for Leeds.

Lose and they’re all but guaranteed to play Championship football next season unless Burnley don’t lose both their games and then the Brentford game becomes irrelevant for the Whites.
