Alan Shearer apologises to Lukas Nmecha for what was said about Leeds star on MOTD

Lukas Nmecha was the hero for Leeds United as he scored the winner against Fulham on Saturday afternoon.

Leeds beat Fulham 1-0 at Elland Road to remain eight points clear of the Premier League relegation zone.

Nmecha came on as a late substitute, and the move from Daniel Farke worked to perfection as the German striker got on the end of Ethan Ampadu’s cross in the 91st minute.

The Whites have now won four of their last eight top-flight games at home, and have picked up 14 points in total since the beginning of December.

Lukas Nmecha makes up for three errors

With the scores at 0-0 and Leeds pushing for a winner, Farke replaced Jayden Bogle with Nmecha to give the hosts more attacking options.

While he managed to grab the only goal of the afternoon just 10 minutes after being introduced, his substitute appearance didn’t get off to the best of starts.

The first three clips of the German on BBC Match of the Day were of him giving the ball away immediately after coming onto the pitch.

Presenter Mark Chapman said: “He (Nmecha) looked like, with his first three touches, that he hadn’t worn boots before.”

Alan Shearer apologised to Nmecha for the highlights they had chosen to show of the 27-year-old.

Shearer added: “He’ll love us for showing his first three touches, sorry.”

However, the former Newcastle United striker did then heap praise onto Nmecha for his winner, focusing on his movement to get away from the Fulham defender.

Shearer said: “Watch Nmecha’s movement. We’ve shown the three touches he gave away, but that is a clinical finish. Fantastic to get himself ahead of the defender and then put it in the back of the net. That was the important one and got his team three points.”

Should Lukas Nmecha start for Leeds?

Since returning from injury at the end of December, Nmecha has struggled to win back his place in the team, only starting one of the last five Premier League games.

Farke has preferred Noah Okafor alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin up front, meaning that Nmecha has been limited to minutes off the bench.

However, the German forward grabbed his opportunity as a substitute against Fulham, popping up in stoppage time to secure all three points for Leeds.

Nmecha’s exploits in front of goal have given Farke a big decision to make ahead of Leeds’ trip to Everton next weekend.

The 27-year-old is clearly more of a threat in the box than Okafor and must surely be in line for a start at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
