Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker react as Leeds United lift Championship title

Leeds United clinched the Championship title in dramatic fashion after defeating Plymouth Argyle 2-1 at Home Park on Sunday.

A 91st-minute Manor Solomon goal meant the trophy was snatched away from Burnley, with the Whites finishing top on goal difference.

Since their title win, everyone surrounding the Premier League have been sharing their thoughts on the triumph ahead of their return to the grandest stage.

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer discuss Leeds achievement

Leeds looked destined for promotion for much of the season but faltered towards the end after some clangers by goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Chants of ‘Leeds are falling apart again’ echoed around several grounds, but Daniel Farke steered his side to a famous promotion.

It means that the Whites will return to the Premier League at the second time of asking, having been defeated by Southampton in the play-off final last season.

Leeds won the Championship by the finest of margins

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer were full of praise for the Yorkshire club when speaking on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football (5 May 2025).

Lineker said: “It’s a big club as well, Leeds is a big club that should be in the top flight.”

Shearer replied: “Huge club, massive fan base, I love it, I think it’s great that they’re up, yeah.”

Farke to be given Premier League shot with Leeds

Although there was talk that Farke would be sacked despite winning promotion to the Premier League, he is deserving of the opportunity to stick around.

Farke won his third Championship title with the Whites, having achieved the feat with Norwich City on two previous occasions.

The German managed the Canaries in the top flight and suffered instant relegation, but he did so on a minimal budget.

This season, the 48-year-old won the title despite the Yorkshire club selling Archie Gray, Georginio Rutter, and Crysencio Summerville last summer.

Leeds will have a more significant budget available as they prepare for the Premier League and already possess a strong side, which provides hope to buck the current trend.

The Whites will need to bolster their attack, with Manor Solomon set to return to his parent club, Tottenham Hotspur, if permanent terms cannot be agreed upon.

Although Joel Piroe won the Championship Golden Boot, more firepower will be needed in the Premier League.

With Leeds set to return to the big time, Farke must be allowed to build a squad to compete.
