Alan Nixon: Lewis O’Brien open to new Huddersfield deal after failed Leeds move

Huddersfield Town ace Lewis O’Brien is open to talks on a new deal after a move to Leeds United fell through, according to Alan Nixon.

Both clubs could not agree to a fee for the 22-year-old English midfielder during the summer transfer window, with the Whites going for an attacker instead at the end of the day.

O’Brien is ready to put the disappointment of the failed move behind him, and is looking forward to committing his future to The Terriers.

The Sun journalist Nixon posted on his personal Twitter account on Sunday morning: “Huddersfield. Lewis O’Brien open to talks on a new contract after the Leeds affair.”

Moving on

According to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay, the Elland Road outfit valued O’Brien at £4million, but Huddersfield wanted no less than £8million.

Leeds believed they did not need the midfielder enough to make the extra money worth paying, and despite their plans to bring in a new centre-mid all summer, they eventually shelved it and brought in Wales international forward Daniel James from Manchester United.

Given Marcelo Bielsa’s style, the Whites head coach is not expected to change his mind in January, and O’Brien is moving on.

He will now be looking to seal Premier League promotion with Huddersfield, and Leeds will be hoping Adam Forshaw can be able to provide much-needed cover in the position for Kalvin Phillips this term.

The Leeds midfielder has regained full fitness after missing the entirety of the last two seasons, and he will be keen to force his way into the Argentine’s first-team plans and prove that he can still cut it in the top-flight.
