Alan Nixon delivers key update on potential Leeds move for ‘amazing’ youngster
Leeds United are big favourites to sign Wigan youngster Sean McGurk, according to the Sun’s Alan Nixon.
The Whites have been linked repeatedly with the 17-year-old over the last few weeks, but seem to be willing to bide their time when it comes to his signing.
Leeds had a bid knocked back for him in January.
McGurk is yet to feature for the Latics first-team, but after signing Joe Gelhardt in the summer Leeds could try to poach another of Wigan’s brightest prospects.
Alan Nixon provided a significant update in Leeds’ pursuit, saying, “Been in for months. No great rush. One for future. And don’t think he goes elsewhere.”
That says that Leeds are the front-runners for the youngster’s signature, but no time frame has been placed on when the possible move will take place.
One for the future
Like Gelhardt, McGurk is a player who would be a player for Leeds in the long-term, with the pair having impressed in the Wigan academy.
Peter Murphy, Wigan U18 manager, has previously described McGurk as “brilliant” and “amazing”, and Danny Mills is also impressed by his ability.
He argued that the Whites needed the midfielder back in November, suggesting numbers were low in the middle for the U23s.
Gelhardt’s five goals in nine Premier League 2 outings show he has settled in at Elland Road, and he could help McGurk to do the same.
McGurk’s contract expires in the summer and Leeds could be holding out for a certain price – but this is a transfer we expect to go through. And very possibly in the January window.
