‘Air of positivity’ – Sky Sports pundit claims new EFL update gives Leeds fans fresh hope
Sky Sports pundit David Prutton has said that the new EFL suggestion to cram the remaining 19/20 fixtures into a 56-day period is a “feasible” plan.
He also said it is right that EFL chairman Rick Parry is focusing on these issues despite what is going on in the wider world.
Writing in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Prutton says the plan hadn’t been thrown together “willy-nilly” and that it gives Leeds fans and fans of other EFL clubs something to look towards.
However, he also sounded a note of caution and said, “We don’t know what is going to happen and in a week or two week’s or a month’s time things might have changed for the better or things might have changed for the worst.”
“People want one season to finish before another starts and I get the feeling that is the case across the board,” Prutton said.
“There seems an air of positivity about it all which is helpful in this unending cycle of news that we hear of how the general state of the world is.
“If you are a football fan of Leeds United or of any team in the EFL, it gives you something to think about and something to perhaps look towards.
“And from a planning point of view, it tells the players to pull the reins in on the fitness stuff that you are doing and gear up again to begin training at a time which is completely upside down in terms of getting fit again in May.”
We’re expecting the Leeds players to dial down on their training with these new dates in mind – a return to full training on May 16 with games to start again in June.
This will be their summer holiday as the 20/21 season is likely to start without a proper break if 19/20 fixtures are played in June and July.
It’s impossible to put a concrete timeframe on things at the moment with the Coronavirus outbreak still to peak in the UK.
However, that could happen in the next fortnight and then it will be about managing the epidemic down.
Parry’s plan is, as Prutton said, “hectic”, but it will give football fans everywhere, and especially Leeds supporters, something to look forward to.
