Adrian Durham mocks Leeds United with Southampton stat on talkSPORT

Adrian Durham and Darren Gough shared their concerns over Leeds United on talkSPORT after the West Yorkshire club’s latest defeat.

Leeds lost 1-0 at Southampton on Saturday to leave themselves 17th in the Premier League table after eight games.

“I’m starting to worry about Leeds now,” Gough said via talkSPORT’s ‘Drive’ show [18/10/21].

“[They’re] Missing players but the longer these guys are out, you do start to worry.

“I am starting to worry because I think it is one of those clubs, we saw it happen to Sheffield United, [had a] great season and then hard to back it up, and is it happening to Leeds?”

Durham responded: “That second-season syndrome is something that gets talked about and Leeds said ‘it won’t happen to us’ and here they are, eight games in and just the one win and they lose at Southampton.

“Can I just remind everyone of this Southampton stat. Since the tears after beating Liverpool 1-0 in January, they’ve beaten four other Premier League sides before Saturday, and they weren’t good sides.

“So Leeds need to start wondering whether things need to change.”

Worrying?

Performances and results have been an issue all season for the Whites, but context is more important than ever after Saturday’s defeat.

Leeds were depleted for their trip to the south coast, unable to field a host of first-team stars at St Mary’s Stadium.

Arguably, Luke Ayling, Robin Koch, Kalvin Phillips, Raphinha and Patrick Bamford all start in their strongest XI, and none of them were in the squad on Saturday due to varying reasons.

The loss of Raphinha and Phillips was a particular blow as Marcelo Bielsa’s side failed to create many clear-cut goalscoring opportunities, failing to hit the target from just three shots.

Hopefully, some of their stars will be able to make their return for the visit of Wolves to Elland Road on Saturday afternoon.
