Adam Pope shares what he saw from ‘sensational’ Calvert-Lewin in Leeds win vs Wolves

Leeds United were outstanding on Saturday as they beat Wolves 3-1 at Molineux.

Daniel Farke’s side finally picked up their first away points of the season after being cruelly robbed of a deserved point against Fulham the week before due to Gabriel Gudmundsson’s own goal.

Crucially, the Whites also managed to end their goal-scoring drought from open play, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Noah Okafor finding the back of the net against Wolves, either side of an Anton Stach free kick.

However, Adam Pope singled out one of the goal scorers in particular as being especially impressive during the win.

Adam Pope labels Calvert-Lewin ‘fantastic’ in win against Wolves

Calvert-Lewin’s header was praised by Danny Murphy as the striker found a crucial equaliser for Leeds after they initially went a goal down.

Aside from his goal, however, Calvert-Lewin delivered an all-round spectacular performance against Wolves, with the striker showcasing how to lead the line for a side in a relegation battle.

The former England international’s performance was also praised by Pope on the Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet podcast on 22 September, by saying, “I just saw (Calvert-Lewin’s) attitude, and he’s got that, it’s not like a swagger, but it’s just a confidence that I’m fine, I’m confident in my own ability and even if I didn’t score, it’d be fine.

Pope continued: “His performance was fantastic everywhere. I think having people like that in your team who sort of know the Premier League makes such a difference. You can see it a mile off…

“For me, Calvert-Lewin was sensational, and overall it was a really good performance.”

49ers will regret the decision not to sell Joel Piroe

Given the fact that both Lukas Nmecha and Calvert-Lewin have impressed more than Joel Piroe when they have all played, the 49ers will surely be kicking themselves that they didn’t sell the Dutchman to aid with their PSR troubles.

Leeds maybe should have sold Piroe, coming off the back of his prolific campaign in the Championship, whilst his stock was at its highest.

It was clear to everyone that he would not be able to handle the physicality of the Premier League, and if Piroe continues to put in performances like he did against Arsenal, then the 49ers will receive a fraction of what they could have done if they sold the striker at the right time.

Investing the funds from a Piroe sale into a new right winger would have completely changed the look of Farke’s side and undoubtedly would have been more useful in their fight for Premier League survival.
