Adam Pope: Leeds could be set for £14m windfall this summer

Leeds United could get an unexpected windfall of £14million this summer according to BBC journalist Adam Pope.

The sum will be determined by the Whites’ league position, with the Premier League paying clubs hefty sums to clubs finishing in the top half.

And after budgeting for a 17th place finish, the club could get £14million more than they planned for, tweeted Pope.

He wrote, “Top half finish also means around £14m more in income than budgeted 17th place.”

Leeds could seal that tonight with a win over Southampton. Failing that, a win against relegated West Brom on Sunday would also see Leeds finish in the top half of the Premier League.

What should the money be spent on?

The club will be very pleased to receive such a big sum unexpectedly, and it could be put towards a number of different avenues.

Leeds have planned to relay the pitch at Elland Road so the money could facilitate that, or go towards new contracts for players who have impressed.

Persuading the sought-after Raphinha to stay would be a very good use of the money, for example.

Victor Orta may also be hoping to get his hands on the money as £14million could buy a very good defender – Robin Koch was signed for less than that last summer.

It could also be put towards a top-class striker, midfielder or left-back, such as Nicolas Tagliafico, which is the position most in need of strengthening.

However the club decides to use the money we will back their judgement, as they have not got a great deal wrong over the last few years.
