Adam Forshaw reveals why it took so long for him to undergo surgery on hip injury
It may seem like a long time ago when Adam Forshaw’s injury woes were a hot topic for Leeds United supporters but the midfielder has finally revealed why it took so long for him to undergo surgery.
Forshaw, 28, has not played for Leeds since September 28 when he featured for 45 minutes against Charlton.
Since then there were updates on his recovery but it would always be that the midfielder was close to a return, had been in training or was set to play for the Under-23s.
Unfortunately, his progression towards recovery would always take a backwards step just when it seemed as though he’d be close to playing again.
And that is essentially what the issue was for Forshaw, who jetted out to Colorado in the USA last month to undergo an operation.
It meant that the midfielder wouldn’t play against for Leeds this season – before the coronavirus-enforced suspension – but it does seem as though it was the correct decision.
“At first I was obviously clinging onto the hope that I was going to get fit anyway, I didn’t know it would come to this in the end,” he told the Yorkshire Evening Post.
“I wasn’t too bad to be honest, in general. I love keeping fit and in shape, so even being in the gym, the pool, doing my rehab I was okay.
“But ultimately I wanted to play football again.
“I kept getting within a week, two weeks of full fitness and unfortunately I’d break down again. The longer it went on the more frustrating it got for me.”
Forshaw added: “From then on I was setting targets, to be back for certain games or to be in training at certain times but I would get within three, four, five days of a session and as I ramped up the rehab I broke down.
“We came to mid-December, January and I realised it was probably the only option in the end.”
You can understand why Leeds fans were so desperate to see Forshaw return to full fitness because he had played so well before his injury in September.
It was frustrating then to have such a lack of information on his fitness but, now we know the full story, you can see why Marcelo Bielsa always kept his cards close to his chest.
He didn’t want to say Forshaw was x-number of days away from recovery or x-number of matches he’d miss. No one knew for sure.
In other Leeds United news, Kalvin Phillips’ chances of playing for England at the European Championships are likely to have increased.
