Adam Forshaw and Darko Gyabi plans to change as Mateusz Klich edges closer to Leeds United exit

Adam Forshaw is now unlikely to leave Leeds United in the January transfer window after Mateusz Klich edged closer to joining DC United.

The Polish midfielder has been linked with an exit away and news broke on Friday (9 December) that he was in advanced talks with MLS side DC United about a move during the January window.

And according to James Marshment, that transfer is now likely to see plans change at Elland Road for the rest of the season, and specifically for Forshaw and young midfielder Darko Gyabi.

“Klich’s exit will likely impact the initial plan to let Forshaw leave in January,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account (9 December).

“With midfield options short, Forshaw may now stay til the summer and leave as a free agent. Biggest player to gain though may be Darko Gyabi, who will likely find his path to side fast-tracked.”

Leeds have been light in midfield all season, with a heavy reliance on both Marc Roca and Tyler Adams, but if Klich is to leave the club then there is surely no way anyone else can too.

Forshaw looked destined for the exit after barely featuring this season due to injuries and non-selection, and with his contract expiring in 2023 it looked like an easy out for everyone.

Gyabi was a summer signing from Manchester City as part of the Kalvin Phillips deal, but he’s spent most of his time in the reserves, showing that the plan the club had for him is one for the future rather than now.

But plans change and the sign of a well run club is when plans can be adapted on the fly, and that’s exactly how Leeds have responded by seemingly putting previous ideas on the backburner.

Now Forshaw will have extra time to potentially earn a new contract at the club if that is what he wants, and Gyabi will have the chance to show he is ready to make strides in the Premier League now.
