‘Bigger problem’ – Adam Forshaw admits recent Leeds talks came as a ‘shock’

Adam Forshaw has admitted the talks over taking a wage deferral at Leeds United had come as a ‘shock’ to players but said it was the right thing to do.

Forshaw was talking on the Jim White Show (talkSPORT, Monday, 10am) where he also confirmed he was still on course for an August return.

Asked about the Leeds players taking a deferral on their wages, Forshaw said, “We’d been talking to the club and it’s the right thing to do. It will hopefully stop a bigger problem in two months’ time.

“As footballers, it’s come as a bit of a shock. You get used to the lifestyle, but Leeds are facing losing a lot of money and as players you have to think long term. It’s the right thing to do.

“No one knows how long this is going to go on but you don’t want to get into a situation in three or four months when you don’t get paid at all.”

The gesture from the Leeds players was hailed by the fans and pundits alike.

MOT Leeds News columnist Paul Robinson said it was an “outstanding” gesture and said that it proved Leeds was one big community.

The wage deferral means that non-footballing staff will be paid and that no one would be made redundant.

These staff are the lifeblood of the club and aren’t rewarded anywhere near the level of footballers – we’re proud that the Leeds players took the lead here.

Forshaw did admit that there could have been bigger problems down the line if they hadn’t taken the temporary hit to their wages and that proves that it’s not just smaller clubs who are going to suffer in the next few months.

We imagine pay cuts will soon be the norm in the football world.
