'Absolutely outstanding' - Paul Merson heaps praise on Leeds ace after 'phenomenal' display

Paul Merson has heaped praise on Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier for his performance in the 1-0 win over Sheffield United last weekend.

The 20-year-old caught the eye against the Blades with a number of impressive saves in just his third Premier League appearance.

Meslier’s interventions allowed his team to remain on level terms with Chris Wilder’s men before Patrick Bamford wrapped up all three points with a late headed effort.

And Merson loved what he saw from the French starlet.

Speaking on Soccer Saturday (Sky Sports News, October 3rd, 12pm), he said: “Absolutely outstanding.

“Some saves goalkeepers make and you ‘I’d have saved that’, but some of the saves he made were phenomenal.

“He had no right to save them.

“He makes saves that good goalies make, and at that age – outstanding, absolutely outstanding.”

Meslier was in inspired form last week, and some of his interventions were nothing short of sensational.

The save he made from John Lundstram alone was absolutely world class, and there were plenty of other vital moments peppered through the rest of his game too.

In fact, Meslier faced an xCG of 1.92 against the Blades, as per Wyscout, and to keep a clean sheet under such immense attacking pressure speaks volumes as to the youngster’s quality.

It’s little surprise to see that Garth Crooks included him in his Team of the Week for BBC Sport, and if Meslier produces this kind of display on the regular this season, don’t be surprised to see him included a few more times too.
