'Absolutely' - BBC pundit urges Leeds to raid PL club for 'invaluable' summer signing
Noel Whelan has admitted that he would love Liverpool midfielder James Milner to rejoin Leeds United this summer.
The BBC pundit believes the boyhood White would be a great addition at Elland Road, with promotion to the Premier League a massive probability this season.
Whelan did question whether or not Milner would leave current Champions League winners to join Leeds, who would welcome one of their own with open arms.
Whelan went onto suggest that Milner is invaluable to any side, and will be in top condition despite turning 34-years-old this season.
“You want your home-grown back at your football club,” he told Football Insider. “I am not sure if he would leave Liverpool right now.
“He is one player that Liverpool would want to keep because of the professionalism he has. He stayed home and watched the FA Cup when the young lads were playing instead of going abroad – that is invaluable. For a club to have a professional like that, concentrate on the FA Cup even though he is not playing that is brilliant for the younger lads.
“He looks after his body and he still has the hunger to win. He has got a lot to offer. I would love him back at the club at some point. I am not sure whether it would be next season but he would help us, absolutely.”
Midfield is definitely an area that Leeds would need to strengthen in the summer, regardless of whether they earn promotion or not.
Without Adam Forshaw, Leeds have used Pablo Hernandez in the middle which leaves Jamie Shackleton as a back-up – something which has left the Whites weaker when Kalvin Phillips has been absent.
Whelan is right to suggest that it is unknown if Milner would jump at the chance, but he would be a sensible addition for the Premier League. The 34-year-old has featured 18 times under Jurgen Klopp despite him having younger options like Naby Keita – Leeds must explore this possibility.
