Aaron Mclean blasts Daily Mail over story on Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips
Former Bradford and Peterborough player Aaron Mclean has torn the Daily Mail to shreds over a story they published on Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips.
After a man of the match performance for England in their Euro 2020 opener against Croatia on Sunday, the Mail ran a story profiling the background of Phillips but in their headline they decided to include the fact the midfielder’s father is currently in prison.
Sky Sports pundit Mclean was horrified by the Daily Mail’s headline and launched a fully-justified attack on the newspaper via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday.
Mclean said: “The Daily Mail is an absolute disgrace.
“Instead of heaping praise on Kalvin Phillips, a young man representing the country and doing an amazing job, you want to dig up dirt on his family.
“You’re an absolute embarrassment!”
How do they get away with it?
Let’s face it, it’s not the first time we’ve seen a newspaper treat a player differently due to the colour of his skin and it unfortunately will not be the last.
One Twitter used replied to Mclean’s tweet to show how differently Manchester City’s Phil Foden is framed by the Daily Mail in their story about him.
We’ve seen it happen time and time again with Raheem Sterling and unfortunately, it always seems to be the same newspapers who are doing it.
How are they getting away with it?
What has Phillips’ dad being in prison got to do with the midfielder’s stunning display on the hallowed Wembley turf on Sunday?
It was one of the best performances an English player has given in a major international tournament in a very long time and the Daily Mail is dredging up stuff like that about his family.
It’s awful and it’s irrelevant.
