The Athletic’s Phil Hay has said that there is “a lot of speculation all of a sudden about Dan James” signing for Leeds United.
And, on the latest episode of his podcast, Hay added that Leeds “wouldn’t be taking an interest if it was off the table.”
James is struggling for game time at Man United and Mason Greenwood has moved ahead of him in the pecking order at Old Trafford.
“There’s a lot of speculation all of a sudden about Dan James and he is someone Leeds would be very keen on if it came round that Man United would be willing to loan with an obligation or to sell,” Hay said.
“I’m pretty certain Leeds would try to do that. They do have one loan spot left.”
“It will depend on Man United. And that will be influenced by what they do themselves in the transfer market. But that’s definitely one to watch.
“Clubs don’t waste time on deals they don’t think they can do and Leeds wouldn’t be taking an interest if it was off the table.”
If Leeds did sign James it would bring a very odd transfer saga full circle.
It all started just before the 2019 January window, when Leeds signalled an interest in the then-Swansea winger.
Not many Leeds fans knew much about him then but as the window rolled on and it became apparent that he was the club’s number one target, the excitement started to grow.
James had only just broken through into the Swansea team but this really put him on the map.
The move fell through on deadline day in dramatic fashion, with James at Elland Road having passed his medical and recorded a welcome video.
He stayed at Swansea and Leeds missed out on automatic promotion. James went on to sign for arch-rivals Man United in the summer of 2019.
James started off well at Man United but has struggled for game time and is now seen as back-up to Mason Greenwood.
Bielsa is obviously a big fan and signing James, on top of the other new players Leeds have added, is an exciting prospect.
