49ers on verge of pushing button on half-a-billion Leeds United takeover - Phil Hay

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has suggested that the 49ers are ready to “push the button” and complete their takeover of Leeds United.

The Times (9 November) reported that the American enterprise has secured the funds to complete a full takeover of the club. Hay had previously suggested (Phil Hay Show, 11 November, 18:29-19:05) that the Yorkshire side were valued in the region of “half a billion”.

It’s all gone relatively quiet on the takeover front since then, however, in the latest edition of the Phil Hay Show, The Athletic journalist revealed that it won’t be “too much longer” until they acquire a majority stake in the club.

“The interesting thing about the period which has just gone as it was like the summer but in November and December. Everybody seems to feel that it is right there and that it’s coming at some point [49ers takeover],” said Hay (29m 10s, 23 December).

“It feels as if when the point comes when they decide we will push the button, then we will go but it surely can’t be too much longer.”

Right time?

The 49ers will be assessing when the perfect moment will be to complete their takeover, and the January transfer window may not be the ideal time. Jesse Marsch will have his transfer targets within a certain budget and if they do complete a takeover, the American may well have to rethink his current plans.

Moving in the summer, just after the season has ended seems like the most suitable decision. It will allow plenty of time for the new owners to implement their own structures at Elland Road ahead of the 2023/24 season. Ideally, the 49ers will share their intentions soon, to allow for there to be a clear idea of what the future has in store for Leeds.

Preparations for the summer will begin as soon as the January window shuts and giving Marsch and people behind the scenes a clear idea of what they’re working with is essential.

Fans will be hoping for some information in the coming weeks to clear up the current stance of the American enterprise as we head into an absolutely vital part of the season.

In other Leeds United news, this Elland Road veteran is now unsure whether he wants to end his time at LS11 despite a deal being close across the pond.
