49ers officials jet into Leeds United as Javi Gracia hired to replace Jesse Marsch
By Matthew Smith
Javi Gracia met with 49ers Enterprises officials before becoming Leeds United’s new head coach, according to The Athletic.
The Spaniard was confirmed as Jesse Marsch’s successor on Tuesday afternoon (21 February) following an underwhelming defeat against fellow strugglers Everton last weekend.
With Leeds currently 19th in the Premier League and two points from safety, Gracia’s immediate goal will be to navigate the Whites away from danger as his predecessor, ultimately, did last season.

In an interesting line from the Athletic’s report, Gracia was said to have impressed 49ers Enterprises, alongside other board members, in a sign of the American group’s ever-growing involvement at Elland Road.
The article says: “Contact was made with Gracia in the 48 hours after the clash at Goodison Park and he presented to the club’s board, including officials from 49ers Enterprises, in time to travel to England on Monday.
“His review of Southampton’s 1-0 win at Chelsea was an attempt to convince them that he was up to speed for the immediate obstacle in front of him.’’
Reading between the lines
Whilst it is no secret that 49ers Enterprises have a say in events at Leeds, to take such a practical involvement in recruiting a new head coach is indicative of their increasing influence.

If the group only held a limited interest in United, you would expect them to have left the process to key figures such as Andrea Radrizzani, Victor Orta and Angus Kinnear.
However, their active role in hiring the former Watford boss is certainly encouraging for those who harbour hopes of a change in ownership at Elland Road.
If, as expected, 49ers Enterprises complete a full takeover of the club, supporters can take confidence in knowing they have had a significant input in appointing the new man and a strong relationship has already been formed.
This would ensure an all-important smooth potential transition between ownership groups, instead of posing similar problems to the ones that have been seen at Chelsea this season.
