‘£10m a year’ – Phil Hay details ‘huge’ Leeds off-pitch deal, delivers verdict on maroon kit

Leeds United named their principal shirt sponsor this week, with SBOTOP taking pride of place on the new Premier League kit.

The kit has yet to be officially unveiled, although leaks mean that most Leeds fans know what to expect.

The only hold-up now is the sleeve, with Clipper being named as the training kit sponsor.

It’s been worth the wait for Leeds. The deals are “different level” according to Athletic journalist Phil Hay.

Talking on his podcast, Hay said that they were worth a combined £10m a year – a ‘huge amount of money’ that represent ‘different level’ deals for Leeds.

“My understanding is that the deal with SBOTOP is for around £7m-a-year, so not far off a tenfold increase from before, which gives you a stark indication of how much the finances do leap when you get out of the EFL,” Hay said.

“On top of that they have the deal with Clipper for the training kit and will announce a deal for a sleeve sponsor.,

“Between them they’ll be looking at income of £10m-a-year, a huge amount of money that’s taking them to a different level.”

There was also talk of the dreaded maroon third kit. There’s been huge chat about this on Twitter, with most fans dead against it.

There’s been no official confirmation of that yet and while Hay has seen the home kit, he claimed not to know anything about the maroon kit.

However, as a Hearts fan, he said that he would endorse it.

“It’s what’s been talked about,” said Hay. “I don’t know exactly what’s coming. If it’s maroon – Hearts colours – I endorse that.

“The temptation to gamble is there because of the potential sales. At the end of the day, it’s not red…”

Radrizzani will know all about fan power after his disastrous attempt at updating the Leeds badge.

He will know the feelings around a red kit and we imagine that the third kit will be a deep maroon – not far enough away from red for some Leeds fans but we’re sure they’ll get over it in time.
