‘You’ve said yes’ – Gary Neville makes PL claim on Sky Sports that Leeds fans will love
Gary Neville has said that the Bundesliga has had a big impact in England and, with a Premier League vote set to pass on contact training, players have effectively given the green light to football – and the Leeds United promotion bid – kicking off again.
The government gave its approval for contact training earlier this week and the Premier League is set to vote on it today.
It’s expected that all 20 clubs will vote for contact training to resume, with a vote in the Championship expected to follow suit.
Talking on The Football Show (Sky Sports, Wednesday, 9am), Neville went on to say that players shouldn’t need long to get back playing and that June 19 is a realistic target for games to restart.
“The majority of players would vote to go back. Once you’ve accepted that contact training will take place you’ve said yes to restarting.
“Watching the Bundesliga will have had a big impact on the players.”
When quizzed by Geoff Shreeves about managers wanting more time to get their players ready Neville said, “I’ve never been that concerned. There will be muscle injuries but there is through normal seasons.
“I don’t liken this period to pre-season, with people saying it’s double the pre-season and they need double the time to train.
“I look at it more like an eight-week injury. Players would come back into the squad for a week or two and then look at playing.”
Both the Premier League and the EFL are meeting today with football on a steady march back to a sensational kick-off in June.
The Bundesliga has been a resounding success and it seems that any fears the players had have been allayed.
There are still a few steps for the Championship to get through after group training restarted at Thorp Arch this week.
The Leeds players look fit and ready to kick-off their promotion bid again, with Liam Cooper saying they’re “raring to go” and Jean-Kevin Augustin rocking a new slim look and promising to hit the ground running after a tweet that showed him training with two lightning emojis attached.
Leeds will vote early next week to play on in the Championship and it’s expected that the majority, if not all, the other 23 clubs will follow suit.
A return to contact training should happen shortly after and then we’d be looking for the EFL to confirm a restart date.
Meanwhile, the Premier League is one step ahead and it seems the rebels that want to block promotion for Leeds United have been silenced.
We’re not there yet but it’s getting exciting.
