‘You will need big pockets’, ‘Cancel next season’ – Some Leeds fans react to EFL statement

The EFL released a statement on Wednesday evening that said “football must only return when it is safe and appropriate to do so” and plenty of Leeds United fans have reacted with their own advice on Twitter.

The statement added that talks would continue over the next 48 hours on “several high profile matters… including player wages and the resumption of the 19/20 season”.

It’s a classic non-statement that effectively says that after a meeting the EFL will continue to meet and you can see why fans have lined up to take potshots at them.

To be fair to the EFL, it’s extremely hard to put a time scale on the 19/20 season resuming at the moment.

More people died of the Coronavirus in the UK on Wednesday than any other day in the outbreak so far and it seems likely that things are going to get worse before they get better.

However, player wages dominated a lot of talk in the media yesterday and more should have been said here.

Leeds have already taken the lead by agreeing a deal with players to defer wages so all non-footballing staff can be paid. This should be implemented across the board.

Elsewhere, UEFA cleared a path for the resumption of the 19/20 season by cancelling all international matches in June.

That now means May and June are completely clear and playing games behind closed doors in a short space of time must be an option that’s getting discussed.

We’re expecting more clarity within 48 hours or the EFL can expect more pelters on Twitter.

Meanwhile, here are the best reactions from Leeds fans to its latest statement…
