Sky Sports pundit Sue Smith had just one word when she was asked how Leeds United didn’t win the game against Arsenal on Sunday. Wow.
She added that she had “no idea” how Leeds didn’t end up with all three points from the game at Elland Road.
That was the feeling of most Leeds fans too, after a game that the home side dominated, hitting the woodwork multiple times as they tried to break down a resolute Arsenal side.
Talking on The Football Show (Sky Sports, Monday, 10am), Smith was asked the question, “How did Leeds not win that game?”
“Wow,” Smith said. “Well, I think everyone associated with Leeds United will be saying the same thing.
“I have no idea how they didn’t win the game. They played some absolutely brilliant football.
“The difference was that clinical finish, they hit the woodwork on numerous occasions.
“The positive is that they got a draw after two defeats. They have to look back at the chances created and take the positives but I have no idea how they didn’t win that game.”
Positives to take
It’s great to hear Leeds talked about like this – especially when they’re up against teams like Arsenal.
And most fans will take the positives today after spending Sunday evening frustrated that Leeds didn’t get all three points.
Understats had the game at 1.96 v 0.71 in terms of xG and while Leeds have been hitting their xG levels so far this season, Sunday’s game was a succession of near misses.
The attack momentum graph from SofaScore showed the dominance of the Leeds side and that’s the positive that Leeds fans should take.
Other positives were Rodrigo (peerless) and Raphinha who impressed on his first start.
The point also puts Leeds back on track after two very disappointing results. All in all, it was a brilliant game for Leeds, but without getting the result we deserved.
That’s got a familiar ring to it.
