‘World class’, ‘Stepped up massively’ – Some Leeds fans hail young ‘gem’ after display v Fulham
20-year-old keeper Illan Meslier has been impressing the Leeds United fans after stepping up to the plate in the absence of Kiko Casilla.
Casilla is in the middle of a ban after being found guilty by the FA of racist abuse and Meslier has taken the gloves and played with real aplomb despite huge pressure.
Meslier has kept three clean sheets in four games now and his only blip came in the 2-0 defeat to Cardiff where he should have saved the first goal.
One of his biggest strengths is his distribution that can turn defence into attack in the blink of an eye.
And there are plenty of Leeds fans who want to see him retain the gloves when Casilla is back.
Casilla has served four games of his eight-game ban and would be available for selection in the game against Barnsley.
We don’t think he would come straight back in after so long out. And, we don’t think that Bielsa would take the gloves off Meslier if he carries on impressing between the sticks.
That would make these fans happy and would then open up the debate about who will be the number one for next season.
If that’s Meslier then we might even see Casilla leaving Elland Road.
That’s a decision for the future – here are the reactions to Meslier’s display on Saturday, after he was rated the third-best player on the pitch in the win against Fulham, behind Jack Harrison and Kalvin Phillips [WhoScored]…
