Willy Gnonto first-half moment in Leeds United thriller v Portsmouth leaves pundit stunned
Dean Ashton hailed an “absolutely terrific” moment he saw from Willy Gnonto in the first half of the thrilling Leeds United versus Portsmouth contest.
Gnonto created an opportunity for himself with a nice piece of footwork but his attempt was helped behind for a corner.
The opportunity arrived with the scoreline at 1-1 in Saturday’s (10 August) clash at Elland Road, with the sides going on to draw 2-2 in a dramatic contest.
Speaking on talkSPORT [10 August, 1:06pm], Ashton said: “There was a tiny bit of luck for [Mateo] Joseph to get away from [Marlon] Pack, who tried to pull him back. Gnonto, the way he swivelled on that, was absolutely terrific.”
Willy Gnonto future uncertain at Leeds United
Gnonto was selected in Daniel Farke’s starting line-up and showed real moments of quality in the first half – not least with this opportunity.
Georginio Rutter, Junior Firpo and Gnonto were all involved in the attack in what had been a pretty dominant opening 40 minutes or so.
However, Portsmouth scored against the run of play and then snatched another before half-time to truly stun their opponents.
Leeds responded early in the second half, only for Portsmouth to strike again in stoppage time, but Brenden Aaronson did at least snatch a point.
It is just another example of how tough this division can be to get out of, although Leeds fans need no reminder of that.

As for Gnonto, his future lies at Elland Road for the time being, but there are still three weeks of the transfer window to go.
There has been plenty of transfer activity already this summer, yet the Leeds side that started against Pompey could look different a few weeks from now.
