Wilfried Gnonto called out at Leeds United for what he did before ‘brilliant’ moment vs Manchester City

Leeds United will be aiming their frustration at Wilfried Gnonto as they go in at the break 2-0 down against Manchester City.

Man City have welcomed Leeds to the Etihad in a first away trip for Daniel Farke’s side after the November international break.

The Whites are in need of a positive result after Leeds fell to a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa in their last Elland Road outing.

Farke is destined for the sack at Leeds after a poor start to the season and needs to get the best out of his side away to Pep Guardiola’s men, which looks increasingly unlikely.

The German hasn’t been helped by Gnonto, who is arguably to blame for the away side’s first-half downfall in M11.

Wilfried Gnonto shocking for Phil Foden opener vs Leeds United

The weather may not be ideal for Leeds’ trip to face Man City, but that hasn’t stopped the home side from putting in a positive first-half performance.

City have completely dominated the opening 45 minutes and can feel aggrieved to be only two goals up as the referee calls for the break.

Phil Foden has had multiple chances, with his effort for the opener being one of his more difficult so far this afternoon.

The Englishman netted off the back of a Matheus Nunes cross, reaching the ball ahead of Erling Haaland to open the scoring.

Former Crystal Palace man Damien Delaney was blown away by the strike, but not before he was left fuming by Gnonto’s shoddy defending.

Speaking out via Premier Sports 1 on 29 November, he said: “As the ball gets popped inside, he [Gnonto] just leaves a window of opportunity, he’s got to stay with that runner Willy Gnonto.

He doesn’t, and he leaves a window open. If Foden didn’t get it, Haaland certainly would. It’s not an amazing ball from Nunes up in the air, but Foden is brilliant to catch the underside of the crossbar.

Daniel Farke to blame for Gnonto failings vs Manchester City

The Whites have gone in at half-time down by two, and frustratingly, the away side only have themselves to blame at the Etihad.

Farke has opted to sit back off the ball, but contradicts that entirely by largely playing with the ball on the floor when in possession, and it simply isn’t working.

The German has quick wingers on the pitch in Daniel James and Gnonto, but is instead asking them to track back, which is only inviting more pressure.

Gnonto isn’t a left-back and should be afforded more attacking freedom in the second half if Leeds are to even look like getting anything out of City.
