Whelan slams Harrison
Former Leeds star Noel Whelan has slammed Jack Harrison after a poor performance against Barnsley on Sunday.
He made his seventh consecutive start in the Championship after returning from Man City on loan over the summer, but he was withdrawn at half-time and replaced by Helder Costa.
Talking to Football Insider, Whelan said, “Harrison should be doing so much better. He was invisible for most of the first half apart from when he missed a brilliant chance to put Leeds ahead.
“All he had to do was hit the target and it’s a goal. It was a dreadful finish. You could see the disappointment on his face, and it was the reason he didn’t come out for the second half.
“It was the right decision by Marcelo Bielsa as Helder Costa made an instant impact. He probably did more in his first five minutes of coming on that Harrison did in 45 minutes.”
Harrison should have scored in the first 45 minutes but slammed his shot onto the outside of the post.
It means that he’s only delivered one goal and no assists in seven league games, and that’s not good enough.
The good thing for Leeds is that Bielsa has more depth this season and Costa is an elite Championship player to bring on.
We think Harrison should be dropped for the game against Derby, although Bielsa said that wasn’t a given and said Harrison is a “big player” for Leeds.
Bielsa didn’t drop him after the Swansea game, when he was even worse. WhoScored gave him a 5.97 rating that game, his lowest of the season, and he still started against Barnsley. Two bad games in a row could be the catalyst that finally sees Costa get a start.
