Whelan raves about Nketiah
Eddie Nketiah is turning heads at Leeds already and he still hasn’t started in the Championship.
The 20-year-old was at it again on Tuesday night at Elland Road after being given a start in the Carabao Cup game against Stoke.
He went close in the first half with a beautifully struck shot that shuddered against the post but Stoke went in as surprise 2-0 leaders.
Nketiah was unlucky but he got his goal in the second half before Helder Costa levelled things up on the night.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for Leeds and they lost a penalty shootout when Stoke converted all five spot-kicks and Jack Harrison missed his.
Former player Noel Whelan has been blown away by Nketiah so far and is convinced that the young Arsenal striker is set for a run in the first team before too long.
Talking to Football Insider, he said: “I’m looking forward to seeing more of Nketiah and there’s no doubt I will. He looks brilliant. You watch him play and think, ‘wow, he’s outstanding’ – the movement, the pace, the knack for being in the right place at the right time. Proper striker.
“Nketiah will be in the first team in the league soon enough, and Patrick Bamford will be on the bench. Bamford has made an excellent start to the season and looks fitter and stronger than last season, but he is not going to start every game.”
Bamford is in good form at the moment too – four goals in five Championship games suggest that he won’t be dropped for Saturday’s game against Swansea.
However, having two strikers on top form is a rare luxury for the Leeds manager and Nketiah’s form can only spur Bamford on. He’ll know all too well that any slip-ups could mean him sitting on the sidelines and watching Nketiah bang them in for fun.
