Welsh media wowed by 'star man' Daniel James as Leeds United loanee shines on international duty

On-loan Leeds United winger Daniel James wowed the Welsh media on Tuesday night with his performance in the 1-0 win over Latvia at the Cardiff City Stadium.

James, 25, has struggled at Fulham this season but the winger was at his best as he assisted Kieffer Moore’s winner in Wales’ Euro 2024 qualifier victory.

Rob Page substituted James off after 73rd minute but the Leeds loanee left his impression on the journalists who watched the game.

According to the South Wales Echo via their print edition on 29 March (page 38), James “used his speed and agility to create space before lifting the ball to Moore who headed home at the back post to give the home side a deserved lead at the break”.

In their player ratings, WalesOnline dubbed James as Wales’ “star man” and said: “Far more alert and dangerous than he was against Croatia. In this mood he’s almost unplayable.

“His pace, as ever, caused panic in the backline and his cross for Moore was spot on.

“He’s often criticised for his poor delivery, so credit where it’s due.”

According to The Daily Post (print edition, 29 March, page 46), Gareth Bale “barely had time to take his seat before Daniel James sprinted past Roberts Savalnieks down the left”. James then “combined cleverly” with Aaron Ramsey to assist Moore’s goal.

Back on track?

Let’s not get carried away here.

James was Wales’ man of the match by the looks of it but it came against Latvia, who are ranked 113rd in the world – below the Faroe Islands and North Korea.

There’ll be some fans who are excited by James’ display against Latvia but in truth, there’s been little to be excited by from the Welsh winger this season.

At Fulham, he’s played 16 times in all competitions, starting just three games in the Premier League.

His 14-minute-long cameo against Arsenal on 12 March, Fulham’s final league game before the international break, was his first top-flight outing since 15 January.

James scored against his former club Manchester United in November and also netted against Hull City in the FA Cup in January.

Other than those two goals, James has done very little for the London club and we doubt that his loan will be turned into a permanent one in the summer.
